Time Management seems to be a topic of interest for a lot of people. Here is my Top 5 Tools for taking control of time.
1. Establish Goals, rank them
2. Break your goals down into tasks
3. Assess how you spend your time
4. Purge time wasters
5. Spend time like money
Goals have to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time bound)
Sub-tasks for goals should be actionable items that you can do in 15-30 minute chunks. These list can be pretty long and complex and should be written down.
Assessing how you spend your time has to be honest and detailed. My favorite way is with a log sheet. every time you start something not the time and what you are doing, when you change tasks update the sheet. do this for a week every other month… BE HONEST!
Now that you have a data, find your time wasters and remove them. No excuses. Too many naps? Too much social media? Too much TV or video games? Too many social calls at work? Too much screen time? You aren’t meeting your goals because you are letting the time wasters win.
You need to have a time budget just like you have an actual budget. The difference is that you cant save time, or earn more time. You get what you get. Your success is highly dependent on how you spend your time. Take that task list for your highest priority goal and write it into your schedule.
